Drive 2011: Welcome to a new dawnDear Zainers,

Further to the Group Internal Communications of Monday, May 4th, I wish to announce the formal implementation of the restructuring of our operations in Zain Nigeria line with Zain Group's ‘Drive2011', which will focus on customer facing services and commercial activities while centralizing or outsourcing some back office/non-core functions to strategic partners in order to become a much more efficient organization.

Since January, when we held our Strategy Meetings on the way forward for our organization, there have been a series of changes and new initiatives aimed at driving the company on the path of growth. Specifically, we have, through the various Cross-functional Teams (CFTs) and Task Force Teams (TFTs) developed initiatives that will strengthen our defenses and sharpen our attacks in the ever so competitive Nigerian telecommunications market.

As you already know, the IT Applications and Infrastructure Departments have, through managed out-sourcing, become part of ITS. In future where significant value creation opportunities exist, using the same philosophy from our IT experience, we will outsource activities to strategic partners who have a track-record of excellence in managing such activities.

From today, we will let go 300 of our colleagues. This was a very difficult decision but something that is required within our new business context. The colleagues that are leaving us are brilliant and excellent people and will be treated with the highest degree of respect and dignity. The company will provide these ex-colleagues of ours with every support required including outplacement and counseling services as well as medical insurance for them and their families for three months.

We have also reviewed our regional operations to achieve greater efficiencies and focus on the commercial opportunities available in each of the regions. This review has resulted in the reduction of our regions from seven to five namely East, West, North-West, North-East and Lagos. Details of the structures of the regions will be released shortly.

Over the next few weeks, each of the functional chiefs would be sharing with you their roadmap towards the achievement of our short-term and long-term goals, as well as your individual and collective responsibilities towards the achievement of these.

I am counting on your continued support, hard work and commitment to make Zain Nigeria a successful organization contributing towards our global objective of becoming one of the top 10 telecommunications company in the world by 2011 serving over 150 million customers in the Zain family.

The next few months will test our will to succeed, our desire to contribute and our capacity to play to win. You are my topmost priority right now, and together we will work at rebuilding the morale and injecting the required positive energy and motivation needed to stay the course and win the race.

Thank you all and God bless

Malady mutated to vocabulary on Waziri’s removal by Patrick Obahiaghon

The vaudeville of ratiocinations as
to why Farida Waziri was committed
to Presidential harakiri is not of the
moment to me hoc loco.
It suffices for me to reiterate for
the upteenth time that for any
serious pugilism towards cleansing
the Augean stables and cesspool of
corruption to succeed in Nigeria,our
major anti-corruption armada-the
EFCC- must per force be extricated
from executive suzerainty which
renders it susceptible to odoriferous
and harum scarum paternalistic
intervention.
Save and until this is done in the
mode of appointment of the anti-
corruption czar,a guaranteed tenure
and an unmanacled modus operandi,i
dare posit that the fight itself
suffers from an institutional
thalidomide,abovo.Res Ipsa

Odimegwu Ojukwu, He died with His anger on Nigerian unnecessary amalgam

One of the most charismatic figures in Nigeria’s history, Mr. Ojukwu, who held the traditional title of Ikemba Nnewi, came to international prominence when he served as leader of the secessionist Biafra during a bloody civil war in Nigeria from 1967 to 1970. An Oxford-educated historian, he became the face and voice of the doomed struggle by south-eastern Nigerians to achieve self-rule.

A source within the family told newsmen through SR that Ikemba Nnewi died in the UK after months of hospitalization to treat the effects of a serious stroke he had suffered late last year.

The late Ojukwu was married to Bianca Ojukwu (nee Onoh), an ex-beauty queen in Nigeria. He is survived by numerous children, including Emeka Odumegwu, Jr. and Okigbo Ojukwu, who is based in London.

co-founder of social network site "Facebook" dead at 22

A 22-year-old co-founder of privacy-themed online social network Diaspora died during the weekend, the San Francisco coroner confirmed.

Local media reports indicated that Ilya Zhitomirskiy may have committed suicide, but the coroner's office said it will take several weeks to determine the cause of death.
Zhitomirskiy was one of four US college students who launched Diaspora last year in a bid to win fans as an easier, more private alternative to social networking powerhouse Facebook.
Mysteriously, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly among those who financially backed Diaspora.
The fledgling social network's home page at diasp.org on Monday featured a picture of a giant dandelion going to seed next to an image of Zhitomirskiy seated in a classroom. Beneath the image was his name and "1989-2011."

"We'll all miss Ilya more than we can say," Diaspora co-founder Peter Schurman said in a statement released late Monday.
"Ilya was a great friend and a brilliant person, a visionary whose work for a better future online brought hope to many people," he continued.
Public memorial services are being planned for Friday in San Francisco and two days later in Philadelphia, according to Schurman, who said details of the events would be released after arrangements are finalized.
"In life, Ilya brought people together," Schurman said. "In death, he would have wanted the same thing."
Zhitomirskiy and three fellow students at New York University built Diaspora as a "privacy aware, personally controlled, do-it-all, open source social network."
Diaspora opened to software developers in September of last year and a version of the online network went public two months later.

Siasia Appears At Keshi's Unveiling

"Former Super Eagles' head coach, Samson Siasia made a shock appearance at the unveiling ceremony of his successor, Stephen Keshi in Abuja on Thursday.

Siasia, who was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for failing to lead the Super Eagles to the 2012 Afcon, walked into the media centre of the National Stadium, Abuja - venue of the unveiling ceremony at about 1.55pm local time.

His appearance raised a few eyebrows while others simply applauded as he walked up to Keshi on the podium and embraced him in an emotional atmosphere.

And in a dramatic manner, Siasia handed over an all-green coloured Super Eagles' jersey to Keshi with number four inscribed behind it.

It would be recalled that Keshi wore the jersey number four during his more than 10-year reign as a defender and later captain of the Nigerian men's national team.

The gesture of the former Nigerian Under20 coach drew more applause from those gathered inside the media centre of the Abuja stadium, as he stole the show."

Jim Iyke Arraigned In Court Over N15m Fraud

Nollywood big boy and fashion mogul, Jim Iyke, was on Thursday, November 10, 2011, arraigned for Criminal Breach of Trust, Criminal Force, Assault, Cheating and Criminal misappropriation before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court.

The Police Prosecutor, Chijoke Okezie, told the court that the popular actor defrauded an unsuspecting lady to the tune of N15 million (Fifteen Million Naira) on the pretense that he would give her…
15 percent equity shares of his entertainment outfit, Untamed Records Ltd. According to court document, the lady, Habiba Abubakar, had wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police asking that the matter be investigated. Surprisingly, investigation into the case revealed that the accused, Jim Iyke, indeed ‘deceived’ Habiba Abubakar.

Further findings also revealed that the complainant paid the money into the actor’s Oceanic Bank account No. 00500173691, but he diverted the money for his personal use. It was also said in court that Habiba confronted him about their business deal, only for him to resort to beating her and threatened to kill her if she disturbs him again.

According to the prosecuting officer, the offences committed by Jim Iyke contravened sections 312, 265, 322, 397 and 309 of the Penal Code. When the charges were read to him in court, the bad-boy actor pleaded not guilty, like many accused used to do. His counsel, Esther Uzoma, then prayed the court to grant him bail on self recognition, while promising that he would not jump bail.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. He however added that the sureties must be responsible Nigerians and reside within the jurisdiction of the court. The case was subsequently adjourned to December 9, for the substantive case.

Hmm, na wa o! No wonder buying clothes and international shopping has been so easy recently. Children will be children.
