Saudi Arabia disgraced 400 Nigerian female hajj pilgrims, ‘It’s an insult,’ says Sultan



"Four hundred female pilgrims from Nigeria, who arrived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia yesterday for this year’s hajj, have been separated from their male counterparts and detained by Saudi authorities, the Daily Trust newspaper is reporting this morning.

According to the report, the Saudis requested each female pilgrim to provide her muharram, that is, the approved male companion accompanying her on her trip, usually a husband, father or brother.

Al-Makura Loses three security aides in a ghastly accident

Three male security aides of Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko al-Makura, have died in an autocrash involving his convoy.

Muslims in northern Nigerian states have continued their demonstration against the controversial anti-Islam movie in Kaduna state.
The protesters trooped out in large numbers and commenced the demonstration at Bakin Ruwa near Rigasaat Asikolaye, along Nnamdi Azikiwe western bye-pass road, carrying anti US, Israel and French placards. Amongst the protesters were women, children and the elderly with some drapped in an all-over white attire, carrying flags with arabic inscriptions.

Sensible Lawmakers of Senegal. These are not Jobless

Senegalese lawmakers on Wednesday scrapped the Senate (upper house) and the post of Vice-President in a bid to save money for flood victims. The Senate, dominated by opponents of President Macky Sall, had voted against its own demise last week but its decision was superseded earlier this week by that of the lower house, which supports the move. In a session of both houses on Wednesday, more than two thirds of lawmakers approved the suppression of the Senate with immediate effect thus saving the West African nation a total of €15m (Fifteen Million Euro) to assuage the effect of recent devastating floods. At least 13 people have been killed in several weeks of flooding and thousands left homeless.

Ruben Abati from the Archives



A PhD graduate who specialised in Dramatic Literature, Theory and Criticism, Reuben Abati started as a romance fiction writer.

The Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, in an article, referred to young social media enthusiasts who criticise President Goodluck Jonathan on the social media – twitter, Facebook, etc- as “collective children of anger.” Besides Abati’s well-known repute as a veteran columnist, these are some specks of his eventful career that the “collective children of anger” should know.

1. Smart Kid – Reuben Abati graduated from Theatre Arts department of the University of Calabar with first class honours. He was reportedly the youngest in his class and he completed his PhD from the University of Ibadan at the age of 24, specialising in Dramatic Literature, Theory and Criticism.
