A fire incident occurred yesterday at Arepo destroying properties and causing residents of the area to flee for safety, the fire was said to have started when oil thieves again vandalized the National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) located at the Journalists Estate, Arepo,in Obafemi- Owode Local Government Area of Ogun.
As soon as the fire began, the Ogun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Aboluwaye Akinwande, said he has contacted the line manager of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, to stop supply of fuel to the pipeline to prevent further spread of the fire.
Similar pipeline fire was reported last year leading to petrol scarcity in states supplied by the pipeline. Officials of the NNPC, who went to repair the damaged pipeline and were also killed by the vandals
Cases of Oil thievery is not uncommon in most location where the unmaintained properties of government is situated and left unguarded or manned by compromising official, there is an urgent need for the state to seriously put trusted security team in place to forestall recurrent vandalism in all government properties
